REVIEW: THE COMMON ROOM

Sheffield is known for its steel industry, universities, The Arctic Monkeys, Meadowhall and The Full Monty, but nestled about three-quarters of the way up Division Street is the American inspired The Common Room sports bar. Popular among students and locals alike, The Common Room boasts an impressive food and drinks menu, American-size pool tables, ping pong table and more TVs than you can shake a pool cue at.

The screens, dotted in perfect viewing positions around the bar, constantly show live sports – rugby, football and American football being house favourites – catching your attention during those breaks in conversation. Sitting in one of their navy booths, with your friends, a table full of drinks and posh packet of crisps, is the perfect starting point for a big night out in Sheff – especially on a weekend.

The atmosphere is always buzzing and there’s such an array of people; it’s not solely for students, nor is it purely locals or men in suits. There are two bars which help to ease ‘bar congestion’, particularly on a Friday and Saturday as it does get pretty busy.

For cocktail lovers, it’s cocktail menu heaven. Take your pick from classic beverages such as your Long Island Ice Tea, or choose from a selection of Mojitos, or mix it up and indulge your taste buds in something more quirky like the creamy Raspberry Bakewell or the Smartini (it actually has Smarties in the bottom)! Every cocktail is lovingly crafted by skilled bar staff, all with individual ways of presenting, but each just as satisfying.

Wine, various draft lagers, a rather large collection of spirits, milkshakes and local cask ales are available. Happy Hour is between 5pm-9pm, Monday – Friday.

Peckish? Common Room serves fresh, USA-inspired grub – hot dogs, gourmet burgers, chicken and sharing platters. It is perfect for a full-blown meal or a quick, just-popping-in-for-lunch-kind-of-thing after an afternoon of shopping.

If you’re after a relaxed drinking atmosphere with pals, but still feed off that vibrant, city feel, then The Common Room will make you feel right at home.
